ABOUT MARRAŊU

About Marraŋu

Gawura Wanambi is a CDU Yolŋu lecturer and owner of the Marraŋu language. He is keen to document his language and is looking for ways to make this happen.

Around Gapuwiyak and the surrounding homelands, it is estimated that there are around 200 members of the Marraŋu clan, though only about 12 language speakers, all over 40 years old. Most Marraŋu use Djambarrpuyŋu in their daily life.

Gawura has some recordings in Marraŋu from AIATSIS, including his father telling stories. He also has recordings of his older sister telling stories on Yolŋu Radio. He has begun transcribing these.

This project has been funded by First Languages Australia under the Priority Language Support Fund, as a partnership between Charles Darwin University and ARDS (Aboriginal Resource Development Service)
